Parliament Updates for the Monsoon Session

Parliament’s Monsoon session begins July 21 and is expected to witness heated debates over the Pahalgam attack and Special Intensive Revision of voter lists in Bihar. The Government will introduce several new bills spanning taxation, sports governance and shipping.

The Welfare Bill will return to the Commons for its report stage, MPs will debate the Deprivation of Citizenship Orders Bill and the Hereditary Peers Bill, while Select Committees question Cabinet Ministers on welfare reform, the NHS Plan, Brexit, foreign policy and national security. Backbenchers will lead debates on giving every child the best start in life, the Global Plastics Treaty and end of life care.

On the foreign policy front, President Zelensky’s decision to put Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies under his control has sparked alarm among western officials and activists. The President argues the move will speed up investigations and help combat corruption, but critics argue it will jeopardize the country’s EU bid and access to international loans.

In the Rajya Sabha, multiple MPs delivered farewell speeches as they retire from the Upper House. MDMK leader Vaiko, DMK MPs M Shanmugam and Pudukkottai MM Abdulla and AIADMK’s N Chandrasekharan all thanked their colleagues for their contributions to the House and public life. Parliament’s Deputy Chairman Harivansh and Leader of the House J P Nadda praised their efforts as well.
