A Texas teen is fighting AI-generated deepfake images—and taking it all the way to the White House. The family of a man killed in a road-rage incident brought him back as an AI-generated video to face the killer.

In 1955, Frank Rosenblatt builds the Perceptron computer based on a neural network that “learned” through trial and error. The first computer capable of learning through experience, it was considered one of the earliest examples of artificial intelligence.

Over the next 50 years, scientists developed more sophisticated neural networks. They were used in a variety of applications, from recognizing images to playing games. But it wasn’t until the 2020s that they became truly transformative, with the rise of generative AI. Now the technology is behind voice-controlled virtual assistants like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa, social platforms TikTok and Facebook X, streaming services Spotify and Deezer, self-driving cars and more. Generative AI also helps scientists spot cancers, review X-rays and speed up medical diagnoses.

The growing importance of AI has prompted calls for new regulations that would foster technological interoperability and standards to ensure AI is safe, secure and ethically regulated. But some critics are concerned that these new rules could impede the development of the industry.
